April 11, 2021
Sunday, April 11, 9am through 5pm.
Each of our 6 speakers is given 50 minutes to discuss their topic, followed by a 10 min break [and 40-min lunch break mid-day]. We have 3 dental specialists hosting talks and 3 dental auxiliary professionals hosting talks.
The finale for the day with be all 6 speakers leading a Panel Q&A. You can submit your questions throughout the day and our FVDS Board of Directors will submit those to our speakers.
Dentists and dental auxiliary staff are encouraged to join us for this beneficial day of learning!

Our Speakers
Dr. Breanne Joslin, Periodontist
TOPIC: Highs and Lows of Soft Tissue Grafting around Teeth and Implants
This lecture is a summary of soft tissue grafting options for teeth and implants. We will review the various grafting modalities with the benefits and drawbacks of each. We will examine clinical cases and critique the successes and failures of each.
Learning Objectives
- Identify patients in your practice who may be at risk for clinical attachment loss
- Gain tools to effectively communicate the risks of ongoing attachment loss to your patients
- Broaden your understanding of the various grafting modalities and how they are used in clinical practice
About Dr. Joslin:
Dr. Joslin completed dental school at the University of Manitoba in 2005 as well as a dental internship at the Manitoba Health Sciences Centre where she treated patients with complex medical needs. After four years as a general practitioner, she began her specialty program in Periodontics at the University of British Columbia. She is a Board Certified Specialist in Periodontics, and continues to teach part-time as a clinical instructor at the University of British Columbia.
She is the past president of the BC Society of Periodontists and is an active member with both the BC Dental Association and the Dental Specialist Society of BC. Dr. Joslin maintains busy private practices in Langley and Vancouver.
Dr. Roxana Saldarriaga, Prosthodontist
TOPIC: Restorability of the Endodontically Treated Tooth
This presentation will explain with clinical examples the various procedures available to restore endodontically treated teeth, while reviewing the evidence supporting the best outcomes over the years. Contemporary restorative methods involving bonded ceramics will also be discussed.

- Understand the options available to restore endodontically treated teeth
- Review material selection based on amount of remaining tooth structure
- Develop communication strategies to explain the prognosis of an endodontically treated tooth to patients
About Dr. Saldarriaga:
Dr. Roxana Saldarriaga began her dental training at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru. She continued her studies after moving to Canada, and obtained her DDS degree in 2005 from the University of Western Ontario, School of Dentistry. Following a one-year General Practice Residency at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dr. Saldarriaga entered the Graduate Prosthodontics program, graduating in 2010 and becoming a Certified Specialist in Prosthodontics upon her return to Canada.
Dr. Saldarriaga is in full-time private Prosthodontic practice in Vancouver, B.C. She is passionate about complex treatment planning, fixed prosthetics, and implant dentistry. She enjoys mentoring colleagues through various study clubs.
Dr. Charity Siu, Orthodontist
TOPIC: Invisalign: Innovation is in the Treatment Plan
This lecture is to show that Invisalign appliances are simply a tool to correct the dentition as we have utilized fixed appliances over the past 50 years. The ability to align the teeth still relies on the knowledge and experience of the practitioner to execute the benefits of the appliance adequately. Cases will be shown by using adjuncts and additional tools to expand the scope of Invisalign treatment to make it equal if not superior to traditional fixed appliances.

- Understand that removable aligners are comparable if not preferred for correction of certain malocclusions

About Dr. Siu:
Dr. Siu received her DMD degree from the University of British Columbia in 2001 and completed a two-year General Practice Residency (GPR) at the University of Washington in 2003. She then attended the University of Rochester, Eastman Dental Center where she received her diploma in Orthodontics in 2005. As a Certified Specialist, she has been a fellow at the Royal College of Dentists of Canada since 2005.

TOPIC: the New Patient phone call / phone skills for any practice
The front desk team is the front lines of the dental practice. The patient relationship can make it or break at the front desk. Whether it is your business administration team, treatment coordinator, re-care coordinator, office manager, or clinical team, everyone in the office should understand that the practice growth and survival is based on its new patient growth and patient retention. The new patient phone call is the first impression that lays the foundation for the patient expectation of the practice on appointment day. As well, it is the beginning of the patient journey in your practice that builds loyalty, treatment acceptance and referral of friends and family. Because of the high value of this call, to practice growth, training in this area is beneficial for every team member in the practice to ensure a consistent message is being conveyed throughout the practice. We want the patient expectations that were set on the new patient phone call to be met with an equally positive experience by the rest of the team. In this introductory training session, I will discuss front desk best practice phone policies, provide engaging verbal skills to start building the patient relationship, discuss how to use your tone of voice to create an inviting and memorable call, outline interoffice documentation and communication and how to use this to maximize the patient experience on appointment day. More importantly, you will learn how to make your patient feel like they are the most important person you have talked to today and that they have made the right decision to call your office!

About Benita:
Benita Soni has practiced as a CDA, treatment coordinator, practice manager and consultant for over 27 years. Benita supported practices in various dental practices in British Columbia, both clinically and business and team management. She is currently an Operations and General Manager of two large practices in Vancouver.
She brings her expertise to the dental community with the development of various training programs that defines and sets the foundation for administrative business systems, engaging customer service, and confident verbal scripting as well as dental practice manager training. She has successfully established comfortable change management for the dental team that fits into our “new normal” in the workplace.
Her message is simple: to empower your team with knowledge, support and positive feedback and watch your office strive to thrive in right direction! She has worked and presented her work with Paddy Briggs Consulting, Patterson Dental, Sinclair Dental Nobel Biocare and with the UBC Specialist Progam to bring her information to the dental community.

TOPIC: Strategies to Successfully Treat Special Needs Clients in the Dental Chair
Individuals diagnosed with developmental delays (Autism, Downs Syndrome, ADHD, Fetal
Alcohol Syndrome, etc.) are some of the most challenging clients for dental practitioners to treat. Problematic behaviours occur in the dental chair often due to lack of speech, cognitive delay, processing issues, sensory dysfunction or fear. This presentation will allow participants to better understand the complexity of this clientele. Learn how to approach this population to obtain compliance in the dental chair, making the dental visit a positive experience for everyone.

- Describe characteristics of Autism and related disorders and how they affect dental appointments.
- Discuss Sensory Dysfunction
- Demonstrate some simple tools for appointment success for those diagnosed with Autism or related disorders
About Kayla:
Kayla Ragosin-Miller is a Dental Hygiene graduate from the University of Manitoba. As the Hygienist at BC Children’s Hospital, she is currently involved in research and development, working with children on the Autism spectrum, helping them accept dental treatment in the dental office without general anesthetic use. She works in private practice, consults for UBC about curriculum implementation on Special Needs Dentistry, and lectures extensively on this topic. She has also completed the Provincial Instructors Diploma (PID) and the Provincial Outreach Program for Autism and Related Disorders (POPARD). In 2011, she was recognized by Johnson and Johnson with the Dental Hygiene Superhero award for her dedication working with this clientele. In 2016, she was awarded the Dental Hygiene Making a Difference Award from BCDHA. Through this dental journey, she has been landed with the nickname “Autism Lady of Dentistry”.
